Working In College
Abstract
Many full-time students find it hard to maintain a job, a full course load, and keep their grades to an acceptable level therefore the general conception that college students are poor comes to play. Research was conducted by creating a survey that was sent out to students at the University of Louisville, and by interviewing two students on the topic. 50% of students that are employed who completed the survey said their academics were negatively affected by their job.  36.36% of the students that are not employed said they do not have a job because they did not have time or needed to focus on school; and 91.6% of the students that are not employed said they feel their academics would be affected if they were to add a job in their daily schedule.

Introduction
College students tend to be generalized as poor and struggling due to the lack of students with jobs or students that have to spend their money on their education.  The reasons why students do not have jobs while attending school can be unclear. Depending on some student’s financial status’s they must work to pay for their education and possible all the essentials to live, or in some extreme cases to help out their own families. Students who do not work may feel they do not have the time to incorporate a job into their schedule or that it will take away focus from their schoolwork. This research can help explain the motives behind student’s reasons to work or not work while in college, and whether their academics are affected by this decision.

Methods
Participants: Students at the University of Louisville
Procedures: A survey was made to gather information on students who attend the University of Louisville and their employment status and motives behind these. The survey was sent out through an email to an English class at the university and posted to Facebook to collect results. Two students were interviewed, one male and one female, to gain a more in depth response of their personal motives behind their employment status and if their academics have been affected by this.
Data Analysis: The data was broken down into two groups, students that have jobs and students that don’t, their opinions on their academic performance due to their employment decision was then taken into consideration. Whether or not a student needed the job for financial reasons or for their own pleasure was then noted.

Results
All of the participants in this survey are full-time students (12+ hours), 65% of them male, 35% females. If you refer to table 1, the table shows that majority of participants that do not have jobs do not, because they feel they do not have time for a job, or they feel they need to focus on schoolwork. Adding these two figures together, this is 36.36% of the participants, a little over one third.
Table 1:

Around half of the students that are employed feel that their job affects their academic performance in a negative way, according to figure 1. 12.5% of participants that are employment strongly agree that their academics are affected negatively, and 37.5% agree, which totals to 50% of students.

Figure 1:

(Chart shows students agreeableness with their academics being affected by a job)
Figure 2 shows that almost all of the participants who are not currently employed feel that their academic performance would be affected negatively if they added in a job in their weekly schedule.  Of the 10 students that are not employed, 9 of them answered yes to feeling as if their academics would be affected if a job were taken on.
Figure 2:(Chart shows how students without a job feel about their academics if a job was added into their schedule)

The male student that was interviewed on the subject did not have a job because he felt he did not have enough time for one. “Working on top of going to class everyday, homework, and leisure time is too much for me and something I do not want to have to deal with.” He said. According to him, taking on a job would take away from the time he has to study, and wouldn’t allow him adequate time to relieve stress or do things he actually enjoyed.
The female student that was interviewed was employed because she needs to pay for her education. She stated that she did not want to have a large amount of debt when she graduates and that her parents did not have the money to pay for her education. When asked if she felt as if her academics were negatively affected by her job she answered, “Yes, it is hard to find the time to study, go to class, and work, but it is doable. If I did not need to work as much as I do I would have a lot more time to spend on studying and getting better grades.”
Discussion
These results suggest that many students academic performance is affected by their jobs or that they feel that a job would affect their academic performance, helping to explain some of the reasons why some college students choose not to work. This research was not given to vary many students, and majority of the participants were also males, so there was not much diversity. This research can help explain why college students are generalized as being poor by showing why students choose not to work and how a job can affect a student. In the future, an experiment could be done to help find more information. Student’s academics can be observed in two different semesters, one where the student is employed, and one when the student is not. This can help show how a student is affected by their job and in what ways.

Research Question

Are you a full-time student?

Do you have a job?

If not, why?

If not, do you feel your academic performance would be affected if you added in a job to your weekly schedule?

If yes, why?

If yes, do you feel it affects your academic performance in a negative way?

If yes, how many hours do you work a week?

Male or Female?

Research Question Plan

The research question I will use is do college students have time for a job and does it affect their academic performance?
To get results I will create a survey for students at UofL, with various questions about jobs and their experience with them. I will analyze the data into two groups first, those who have jobs and those who do not, and then go from there, such as why the ones with jobs don't have them and why the ones with jobs do, e.g. paying for school, just want money, helping family, etc.

IMRaD vs Research Argument

One major difference between these two assignments is that the research argument paper was biased and was used to argue a point, the IMRaD assignment is not biased and is just presenting research. Another difference between the two is the type of research that is done, for the research assignment we had to use other scholarly source for our research, in the IMRaD assignment we will be conducting our own surveys. The two assignments also have a different format. The research assignment was like a normal essay you would write with an introduction, body, and conclusion. The IMRaD has separate sub heading for each section and its more of a scientific research paper.

Remediation Project Reflection

The purpose of my remediation project was to translate the information from my research paper to another medium to make the argument simpler and less time consuming to read but still convey the major ideas. I think I did this pretty well, but it was hard to fit in some major points without being too extensive and basically copying what I had written in my paper. At first I had chosen to do a PowerPoint, but I found it difficult to fit the information I wanted to share on slides and keep them relatively short, so I switch to a blog/website. This made it a lot easier for me to share the information because I could put it in paragraph format so I did not have to shorten my points as much.
My target did not change when I remediated my paper, it was still towards people that care about football and the world cup problems that have risen the awarding of the 2022 World Cup to Qatar. This project did change the rhetorical situation somewhat though because it made it a tad bit more informal. The point was to get the information and argument across but in a visually appealing way, so there were more colors used, images, and a lot shorter paragraphs.
Using the blog to present my argument was a lot different than the paper. I used a bigger font, with a black background and white letters, and added images to each page. In the paper there was not images and wasn’t as visually appealing.

Remediation - PowerPoint

I plan on using a powerpoint to remediate my paper because i feel it is the best way to present the information and keep it organized. I plan on using images of world cup stadiums that are supposed to be built for the tournament and videos of interviews with people in the field speaking on the subject. I plan on using some charts and graphs of the weather patterns in Qatar during the summer months to back up my arguments.

Remediation

Remediation is basically transforming info from one media to another, such as a movie that is based on a book. One way I can remediate my paper is by making a power point. In this power point I could add videos, maybe of the interviews that were used in my paper or even a Qatar weather report that shows the summer weather. I could add images of the Qatar that show the heat or of the stadiums that are to be built for the event. Another way could be to make two charts, one with the pros and cons of a summer world cup, and one with the pros and cons of a winter world cup.

Research paper reflection

I chose this topic because it was a controversy that I have seen a lot lately, and one that I actually cared about and was interested in, so I figured I would actually be motivated to the write the paper. Once picking the topic of the 2022 World Cup I had to narrow down the topic to the weather and why it was not suitable for a World Cup to be held at this time. One difficult part about this paper was finding academic sources solely about this world cup. There were a few, but most pertained to the working conditions that are happening there now due to the tournament instead of the tournament itself. To overcome this I used academic sources that weren't necessarily about this World Cup but still pertained to the topic, such as athletic performance in the heat, and tourism in hot places. I feel as if a conference would have helped with my revision, because some explanation behind the comments would have helped me understand what my paper is lacking. This assignment was easier to write for me than the first assignment because I was able to express my opinion, and not just present information in an unbiased manner. In this research paper we had to use research to support our argument of what we believed was true, where in the informational report, we found the information and just presented it without taking a stand. The informational report was not about a conflict or controversy so there really was no way to argue a point, it was just providing information.

Research Paper First Draft

World Cup 2022
According to FIFA’s official website, “Opening matches set new audience high’s for 2014 all over the world as fans watched in record numbers in nations such as Brazil, Japan, Germany, the United Kingdom, Argentina, France, the Netherlands, Croatia and Italy. An all-time high was set in French-speaking part of Belgium.” Being one of the most viewed and popular sporting event in the world, the FIFA World Cup is going to bring a lot of talk and controversy no matter where it is, but the awarding of the World Cup to Qatar to host has seemed to bring about more conflict than any tournament before. Due to the scorching hot temperatures during the summer months in Qatar, which on average can be anywhere between 35 to 45 degree Celsius, according to Aljazeera, a Qatar based broadcaster, there have been questions raised as to whether the tournament should be held in the traditional summer months, or moved to a period when the weather is cooler. Moving a tournament of this popularity, which would break a 92-year tradition of the tournament being played in the summer of course, does not sit well with everyone in the footballing world.  The 2022 World Cup that is to be hosted by Qatar should not be played in the summer due to the extreme temperatures that Qatar face in the summer months. These temperatures are unsafe for players, spectators or tourists, and could affect the amount of people that come to support the event.
During the 2008 Olympics in Beijing there were some cautions with athletes performing based on the high temperatures there, averaging 30 degree Celsius. “The average maximum temperature in August is around 30oC (Table 1) which, according to the WBGT index, increases the risk of heat illness due to environment stress to very high levels.” (Borresen 50) With the average temperature in Qatar well above the temperatures that were posing a threat to athletes during the 2008 Olympics, these conditions are not ideal and are a serious health risk for any professional athlete, let alone one that runs on average 7 miles a match. (Fox) An article written in the California Western International Law Journal states that, “The award to Qatar was particularly controversial, as FIFA’s own technical report stated the high temperatures in Qatar could pose a health risk to not only players but to officials and spectators as well.” FIFA itself has said these conditions can cause health risks, so without an adequate fix to the issue; it would be impractical to stage a tournament during months when the temperature can cause harm.
To deal with this heat at the event, Qatar has proposed the idea of stadium cooling technology during matches. CNN reporter Mark Tutton states, “But football's governing body seems to have been swayed by Qatar's plans to overcome the sweltering heat by building nine new fully air-conditioned open-air stadiums that work using solar power.” Tutton also says, “It will be used to chill water, which in turn will cool air before it is blown through the stadium, keeping pitch temperatures below 27 C (80 F).” This technology would provide a safe environment for the athletes to compete in during matches. The same cooling system would also be used to cool the training facilities used by the teams. (Tutton) There have been some doubts as to if this new technology will work as planned. Mark Hansford, editor for NCE.co.uk, a civil engineering news site, has said, “But Aecom design principal Graham Goymour warned that at this stage it was unknown whether the designs would work.” If this technology is sure to work, it would solve a huge problem, but there are still doubts over whether this will be an effective method of controlling the temperature.
Not only does this temperature pose a threat to the players, but also to the fans of the event. During 2010, there were heat waves moving through Northern Europe that impacted the tourism industry and “tourists experienced thermo-physiological discomfort which could be observed in increased hospital admissions and fatalities”(Becken 7) Some of these temperatures that occurred during these heat waves were lower or around the same temperatures as the average summers in Qatar. (Heidorn) If these temperatures could cause heat related problems to tourists in Europe during that summer, then the same types of problems can occur in Qatar if the World Cup is staged in the summer. According to Becken, “The 2003 heatwave was responsible for 15,000 deaths in France and major shifts in traditional tourist flows for this year away from the traditional resorts in the Mediterranean and towards Northern or Western beach locations.” Although it is the world cup, the heat could still affect the number of spectators that could make the trip to attend the event, as these high temperatures has proven to cause changes in tourist trends in other places in the world. Arsene Wenger, the current Arsenal manager who has been involved in playing and coaching professionally for the past 46 years has recently said in an interview, "It's impossible to play in the summer and I think it makes sense, if you want people to survive there, its the only way to have it in a comfortable way for the supporters.
Although the temperatures will be very hot, fans too will be cooled in the World Cup stadiums during the matches. The bid book director for the 2022 Qatar world cup has said, "The same air will also be projected from the back and neck area of the seats, ensuring that each seating row of each stadium provides maximum comfort and enjoyment to fans," Spectators will also be provided with transportation to and from the stadium that will be using cooling technology to keep them comfortable. (Hansford) This will only be provided to the spectators as they are attended a match, but a majority of the time spent at the event the spectators or tourists will be elsewhere because one can only attend so many matches.
Another issue with the proposal of a world cup that is not in the summer is an interference with the domestic leagues in Europeans countries, where the season lasts from about August to May. The European football community has split opinions on this topic with many of them sharing their opinions on the disruptions a non-summer world cup would cause. Representatives for the English Premier League have said that a winter world keep is “neither workable or desirable for European domestic football” (Eurosport) Karl-Heinz Rummeneige, the chairman of the European Clubs’ Association (ECA) has stated "For the football family, the rescheduling of the FIFA World Cup 2022 presents a difficult and challenging task," Although moving the world cup from the traditional summer months would create a daunting task of readjusting a 10 month schedule to accommodate it, it can be done, and there are many people with experience in the field that believe so. The Serbian Football Association supports the movement of the World Cup from the summer months and believes “2022 World Cup is seven years away and I think they have enough time to readjust.” (Eurosport) Reuters, a reporter for the sports website Eurosport, agrees with the Serbian FA, stating, “As for the disruption, is it really beyond the wit of organizers of the richest leagues in the world, with seven years to work with, to come up with a plan to adjust their current seasonal dates to accommodate one winter World Cup?” With seven years to come up with an alternate schedule for just one year, it is hard to think that some of the biggest sports leagues in the world cannot devise a plan that is suitable for all parties. While Europeans football leagues do provide majority of the players playing in the World Cup, it is still a world event. When the event is held in the summer, it is disrupting many domestic leagues in the Americas who have found ways to deal with the interruptions.
Staging a World Cup in the summer in a country with a place whose temperatures can reach 45 degree Celsius is not ideal for any player or spectator and can pose serious health risks for anyone involved in the event. If the cooling technology is not ready by the time the World Cup is played, the event could be disastrous. This change in tradition does bring up a problem with European domestic leagues, but with time on their side and many intelligent individuals running these associations, a solution can surely be found in the next seven years. All in all, this is the a huge sporting event that occurs only every four years, one year of European domestic football can be altered to accommodate the event. In the words of a two-time World Cup veteran Gary Neville, "Disrupted for a World Cup? You're making the World Cup sound like the Sherpa Vans Trophy. The World Cup's the World Cup, it's hardly a tin-pot competition.”
